Candles add to the beauty and decor of any room and help to provide a
fresh air scent - especially helpful if you have rooms that are prone to
becoming musty or are besieged by stagnant air. At night, candles are superb
for enhancing the ambience of any setting. By following these simple tips,
you can maximize the life and enjoyment of your candles.
1. Display candles away from direct light, as they can fade if left in a
window or directly exposed to bright light for extended periods of time.
2. Trim wicks to 1/4" before lighting. A trimmed wick will inhibit smoking
and carbon build-up at the tip of the wick and provides a cleaner burn. 3.If
you store candles, be sure they are in a cool, dark, dry place. Tapers
should be stored flat to prevent warping.
4. Do not light misshapen or damaged candles, as they will not burn
properly and might present a safety hazard.
5. Put used votive cups in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Left over wax
will fall out very easily.
Did You Know ?... The degree to which we can smell
candles when they are burning is affected by at least 10 variables:
1. The specific fragrance -- some scents are stronger by nature than
others.
2. The size of the room -- a smaller room will contain the fragrant vapor
in higher concentration creating a stronger impression.
3. Air flow and quality -- since fragrant vapor is carried in the air,
factors such as humidity, air conditioning, a fan, an open window, etc. may
affect its movement.
4. The size of the wax pool -- the greater the surface area of liquid wax,
the more fragrance may evaporate into the air.
5. The size of the flame -- a large flame will burn more of the fragrant
vapor before it can escape into the air (keep the wick trimmed).
6. The temperature at which a fragrance vaporizes -- some vaporize more
readily, permeating the air to a greater extent.
7. Other sources of fragrance -- our fragrance perceptions are easily
confused by multiple scents.
8. Other burning candles -- their flames may burn off the fragrant vapors.
9. Length of exposure -- our noses desensitize to fragrances over time.
10. The person smelling the fragrance -- the sense of smell varies from
person to person, much like eyesight, hearing or taste.
Allow candle to burn 3-4 hours per use (smaller candles 2-3 hours) or
until wax pool fully covers the total circumference of the candle. This will
prevent the "hole" down the middle of the candle and will allow you to use
most of the candle wax available.
To prevent skin burns, match holders are recommended for lighting candles
that are near the bottom of a glass or jar and snuffers are recommended for
extinguishing your candle flame. You should never extinguish by placing the
lid on the candle, this causes smoke build up inside the jar and may cause
the lid to crack.
When your candle is finished, you may freeze the candle jar in a
refrigerator to help remove the excess wax left over. When the wax is cold
enough, it should easily scrape right out. It is true that you just have to
light a candle to enjoy it, but there are a few things you can do to ensure
a longer life of your Natural Pure Essential oil candle: Before you light
your new candle, be sure to trim the wick one quarter inch. This will keep
the flame height at a safe and optimal performance level. If the wick is too
long the flame will be too big. This may cause smoke and will make the
candle burn rapidly and unevenly. Conversely, if the wick is too short you
may have trouble keeping your candle lit. Most high quality candles are drip
less. If you are burning a drip less candle, and it is dripping there is an
easy way to help: You should check the room for a breeze or draft. The
easiest way to check this is to light the candle and look at the flame. If
the flame is dancing you have a draft. This will cause the flame to burn one
side of the candle quicker and...drip. Essential oil candles will give off
more scent while burning than just sniffing the unlit wax. If you can not
smell an unlit candle and you don't want to light it to smell it, simply rub
it in your hands and give another whiff. One can keep your candle clean by
wiping it off with a soft cloth dipped in vegetable oil, or use a piece of
nylon to remove fingerprints or light scratches. To blow your candle out
without spattering the wax, just put your finger up in front of the flame
before blowing. This will divert the air stream around to both sides and
prevent the wax from splashing.
